There are many sorts of medical clinics in Singapore and it is difficult to point out which one is best for you. The questions you have to ask are; what are your needs?, what are you suffering from?. I know most of you will not be able to understand what you are suffering from; we are familiar with the carousal of confusion that some symptoms can bring us on. The good news is that Singapore is a world class medical country, with an integrated medical framework that has everything for every need and dedicated health care professionals that will be able to help you in the journey to a healthier life.

One of the great features about medical clinics in Singapore is the fact that there alot of private medical clinics that operate on a 24 hour basis. One such example is Novena Clinic 24 Hours. As its name says, its a 24-hour surgery centre catering to medical and surgical enquiries 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It has a private Accident & Emergency (A&E) facility with recovery suites for post surgical nursing care. Various specialist of different specialty are on call 24 hours. Others include walk in clinics and private practices that are also located within public and private hospitals all over Singapore. They are quite easy to find and their services after normal operating hours are not compromised.

I think that we can divide this category into public healthcare medical clinics and private organisations and practices that are abound in many of the local neighborhoods. Public healthcare medical clinics are managed by the government and regulating bodies like SingHealth, who ensure the quality of the healthcare through many programmes and initiatives that maintains its relevance and adds different disciplines on a yearly basis. Private healthcare is no different, although their price ranges may be slightly different. There is almost no difference in the treatment but private clinics usually are centered either within the city officer or scattered across many of the suburbs and small towns in and around Singapore. They come in the form of family practices or private specialist clinics that can specialize in anything from chiropractic, neurosurgery, cardio-vascular, pediatric and gynecology. There are many more departments but you get the idea. Many people go to private clinics for less queues and more personal treatment – something the public healthcare find it hard to give because of the amount of people they treat.

A simple search online will reveal a whole host of clinics from all over Singapore, specializing in different departments and areas of health. With more than 500 private and public healthcare general and specialists practitioners, there is a niche for everyone, with big names like Johns Hopkins thrown into the mix. In truth the standard of medical clinics in Singapore is very high so you will be assured of the best, everywhere you go.

Medical home? Now there is a new term being used increasingly.

I first read those words on a billboard as I was driving down the highway about a month ago. It was an advertisement for a hospital/medical clinic, and it showed a friendly face, a short description of the person’s health problem and those words in big type at the top. I wasn’t sure just what they were trying to tell me, but the impression I got is that if one has that health problem, then one should go to that hospital or clinic. Kinda like it’s the problems home.

Very interesting!

Soon I saw those words again – Medical Home, this time as a headline in one of the many periodicals I receive as a doctor.

Then I began to read and understand whats up with this new marketing method – it’s a new marketing method. LOL!

Turns out the administrators of medical facilities want people to know that when they have a particular health problem, they should not just go to a medical facility, they should go to a medical facility that is more caring, loving, comfortable, and complete – like a home. Very clever! I’m all in favor of more personalized, coordinated and comprehensive service for patients. Doctors should give patient-centered care.

Its a good idea, but………

After checking some more details I found out the home is missing the proper foundation.

The foundation being the understanding that aside from emergencies, crisis, and life threatening situations, real health and healing comes from within. We’ve each been gifted by God with our own doctor inside of us. Even the world renowned medical missionary doctor and Noble prize winner Albert Schweitzer said:

“Each patient carries his own doctor within him. The patients come to us not knowing that truth. We are at our best when we give the doctor that resides within each patient the chance to go to work.”

This concept of having an inner healing ability, and giving one’s inner doctor what it needs is what natural and holistic health care is all about. These medical homes have little if any holistic care. Some claim to have it but either don’t use qualified holistic practitioners, or rarely refer patients to them. Kind of like inviting a guest to your home but wishing they were not there.

Beware! Homes without proper foundations are risky. Most of them are crooked. If you’re going to have a home insist that it have a proper foundation.

As you start to develop an interest in learning more about transcriptionist work, you’ll need to know that there are certain medical transcription reference materials required to complete your experience. If you choose to obtain transcription training, you should be given plenty of books to help you along the way.

Since you’re new, you probably want to know what type of referencing materials you’ll need. Do not worry, there is nothing hard about transcriptionist work. Probably the hardest thing will be actually getting up and applying yourself. Transcription reference materials are what make the job as easy as it is. It is essentially like having all of the answers you need right in front of you all the time.

Obviously the first reference material you’ll need is a medical dictionary. A medical dictionary such as Stedman’s is a book likely owned by all medical transcriptionists. Any website that gives tips for making your career a success always recommends Stedman’s. Fortunately, a lot of training programs provide Stedman’s medical dictionary along with other required study materials.

Online references will also be helpful when you’re studying and working. Websites such as medterms.com, medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com, and dictionary.webmd.com are just three of the online resources you can use when referencing medical terms. The need for medical dictionaries is necessary because not all dictators speak clearly. Starting a career in transcriptionist work requires a thorough understanding of both the medical term and definition in order to avoid any transcribing mistakes.

Another type of transcription reference needed is a group of websites and books that provide medical abbreviations. Typing out the whole word isn’t always necessary, especially when it is a term such as “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease”. Why type out that term every time when you can just type “COPD”? That’s only four keystrokes as opposed to 34! In transcriptionist work, it’s all about typing speed. If you’re typing a report slowly, you’re going to end up making little to nothing at the end of your work week. Saving yourself time and keystrokes is how you make a high medical transcriptionist salary!

Medication lists found in books and websites can also be very helpful transcription references. Your dictator will list medications in almost every report. If you type out the wrong medication, that could mean the difference between life and death for a patient. Websites like rxlist.com and medicinenet.com are just a couple of the websites you can use. Your training facility may also give you a book on medications. If not, you can always go to amazon.com and order the necessary transcription reference materials.

Surfing the online forums is a preferred method for finding out specifically what types of books are needed. Other experienced people who are in transcriptionist work should be able to help you. Another way to find out what specific references are preferred is by asking your training facility, since not all will provide the materials with your program.

In any event, these materials will help you drastically throughout the course of your training and your career. They are the ultimate tools toward assisting you, right beside your computer and foot pedal.
